The Power Of The Blood Of Jesus
There is power in the blood of Jesus to remove every sin in our lives
Jesus gave His own life for others. Almost anyone can relate positively to that. Such a sacrifice is heroic, deeply moving. It's the ideal film script -- in fact, it has been filmed many times.
The bible shows that He had to die, bearing the punishment on behalf of sinful humanity. It was barbaric, messy, bloody. Did it have to be that way? Is there some special significance in Jesus's blood?
The deep old hymns that speak of 'power in the blood' have been dropped from many modern songbooks. Yet there is a triumphant message in that blood -- and people today need this message and its power!
The blood rescues
We were created in the image of God to be His lovers and His servants. Yet through sin we have been alienated from God and are by nature slaves of sin. God in His justice could have left us that way, without any hope. Yet in His great love He sent His Son to give His life as a ransom.[Matt 20:28]
A price needed paying to make amends for the enormity of our offence. No one on earth was worthy to pay that price. Jesus offered Himself to die in our place, offering His sinless blood as full payment, just as unblemished lambs were offered in Old Testament times for the forgiveness of sins.[1 Pet 1:20][1 Pet 2:24]
Jesus, the spotless Lamb, had to die: "Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins."[Heb 9:22] There had to be blood -- His blood. Without it, we would still be in our sins: "In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our sins."[Eph 1:7][Col 1:14]
The blood restores
Also, the broken relationship with God had to be restored: "Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God."[1 Pet 3:18]
Through the blood of Jesus we can know God again as our merciful Father.[Eph 2:13] At the Last Supper, Jesus said "This is my blood of the covenant".[Matt 26:28] Through that blood we can know an even closer bond with God than Adam had before the Fall.
This restoration goes even further. Through the blood of Jesus we are reconciled to each other. Differences of class and race are abolished and we can find new unity in Christ's Body, the Church.[Eph 2:13-18] The day will come, in God's great plan, when all things in heaven and earth will be restored and reconciled, because of the blood of Jesus.[Col 1:19,20]
The blood cleanses
Jesus's blood has never lost its power to cleanse. That goes for all of us. Jesus is our Advocate in heaven, forever presenting His blood before the Father's throne as full payment for the sin of mankind.[Heb 9:12] If we confess our sins we can be forgiven. Then the blood of Jesus has power to cleanse away both the sin and the cause of it.
"The blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin."[1 John 1:7] The tense of the New Testament verb suggests 'to cleanse and keep on cleansing'.
We do not have to wait until we sin to ask for cleansing. The power of the blood can work on the way we think and feel: "How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God."[Heb 9:14]
The blood conquers
The blood of Jesus is also a weapon, both for defence and attack: "And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb."[Rev 12:11]
The cross of Jesus is the fixed, eternal event in the spiritual realm. Here Satan thought he had won: the Son of God lay dead, His body a mangled, bloodied mess. Yet he had lost for good! Here Jesus won the total victory over all that stood against humanity's salvation.[Col 2:13-15]
That is why we can take our faith-stand upon it when the devil accuses or attacks us. He still has power, but the blood of Jesus before heaven's throne is a permanent rebuke to him. He cannot overturn his defeat. If we carefully stay under the 'covering' of Jesus' blood, the evil one cannot touch us.[1 John 5:18]
For the same reasons, the devil cannot withstand the victorious blood when it is used in spiritual warfare. Claiming in faith its total authority, we are empowered to release people and situations from evil oppression. (See Hot Topics 25 ) Where there is true repentance from sin, God is faithful to cleanse because of Jesus' blood, and the devil loses any 'right' over what he was formerly able to control. Praise God for such release!
