19.  "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20.  Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21.  Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."


HATRED:   inward disposition of hostility; lack of regard for another (1Jo 2:9,11; 3:15; 4:20).

Strife #2052 - N.T. - perhaps the same as #2042 - AV - strife, contention, contentious + #1537 - 1) electioneering or intriguing for office; 1a) apparently, int he NT a courting distinction, a desire to put one's self forward, a partisan and fractious spirit which does not disdain low arts; 1b) partisanship, fractiousness - Further note - This word is found before NT times only in Aristotle where it denotes a self-seeking persuit of political office by unfair means. (A & G) Paul exhorts to be one in the find of Christ not putting self forward or being selfish (Phil. 2:3). James 3:14 speaks against having selfishness or self-promoting in your heart. ENVYINGS:   or ill-will, spite, jealousy; thinking the other person not at all worthy of having what they have, because you want it yourself (Ro 13:13; 1Co 3:3; Php 2:14; 1Ti 6:4-5; Jas 3:14-16; 4:5).

MURDERS:   organized slaughter or to slay another (Mt 5:19,21-22; 1Jo 3:12,15). Jesus says even thinking ill of another puts you in danger of judgement (Mt 5:21-22; Eph 4:31; Col 3:8).

DRUNKENNESS:   from an intoxicant, your intoxication, i.e. being bewitched and drunk with desire (Lu 12:45-46; 21:34; Ro 13:13; 1Co 6:10; Eph 5:18; 1Th 5:6-9). As Joseph Alleine says, "Not only such as drink away their reason, but withal, yea, above all, such as are too strong for strong drink. The Lord fills His mouth with woes against these, and declares them to have no inheritance in the kingdom of God (Isa 5:11,12,22; Gal 5:21)."

Drunkenness #3178 - N.T. - apparently a root word - AV - drunkenness - 1) intoxication, 2) drunkenness - found in - Luke 21:34; Rom.13:13; Gal.5:21.   (Strongs Concordance)


REVELLINGS:   a carousal or rioting, the letting loose of inhibitions, such as in a drunken rampage (Lu 12:45-46; Ro 13:13; 1Co 6:10; 1Th 4:5; 1Pe 4:3).

Revellings #2970 - N. T. - from #2749 - AV - revelling, rioting - 1) a revel, carousal; 1a) a nocturnal and riotous procession of half drunken and frolicsome fellows who after supper paraded through the streets with torches and music in honour of Bacchus or some other deity, and sing and play before houses of male and female friends; hence used generally of feasts and drinking parties that are protracted till late at night and indulge in revelry - found in - Rom.13:13; Gal.5:21; I Peter 4:3
